College football’s Week 1 comes to a close with one Monday game: The No. 25 Tennessee Volunteers against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Atlanta. They’ll play at Atlanta’s massive, ornate new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the second big game there of the weekend after Saturday’s Alabama-Florida State clash. The Georgia Tech flexbone makes the Yellow Jackets a wild card. Nobody in the SEC runs that scheme, which usually puts three men behind the quarterback: a fullback and two slotbacks. It’s a scheme designed to be deceptive and physically punishing, and it’s really hard to game-plan against. The good thing for Tennessee is that this is Week 1, so Butch Jones’ staff has had an entire offseason to figure out defensive solutions.
The Vols had another respectable season for the third straight year and won a third consecutive bowl game. Still, the season had to be considered a bit of a disappointment when they fell short of playing in the SEC Championship game. Defense was an issue as the Vols finished 70th in scoring defense, giving up 28.8 points and 449.2 yards a contest. To help stop the bleeding, the Vols have two of the more dynamic defensive backs in the SEC. Todd Kelly Jr. and Nigel Warrior are both the sons of former Vols first-round NFL Draft picks.
College football season is here and we’ve got one more great game on tap for Labor Weekend to kick things off. Kickoff from the brand-new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta will be at 8:00 p.m. ET on September 4. ESPN will have the national telecast.
